Marjorie Merriweather Post had the greenhouse constructed to house her extensive collection of exotic orchids. Tour the working greenhouse and learn more about its history, Post’s infatuation with orchids, and the exotic blooms and fragrances on display now.

This hands-on workshop will teach you how to care for your orchid in order to get more flowers. Bring an orchid or two from your collection and get specific pointers on everything from watering and pruning to the proper light and fertilizer.
Please note: This program is limited to 10 people, and must have a minimum of 5 participants to take place.

Even with a successful monthly orchid care routine, your plant will benefit from some extra love and attention.  Orchids need to be repotted every one to two years. Each type of plant requires a different potting material and technique. Your plant will leave this workshop with a “good home” and reward you with years of gorgeous flowers.

Tropical plants can provide a welcome balance to orchid collections, and spice up your average houseplant display. Jason Gedeik, head of design operations, will introduce you to ten tropical plants that are easy to take care of and available at your local nurseries and stores.

This is the first program in the Konstantin Makovsky: The Tsar’s Painter series.
Curator Wilfried Zeisler will discuss Makovsky’s boyar wedding-themed paintings as part of a broader interest in wedding rituals in nineteeth-century Russia.

Celebrate spring’s arrival in Russian style. Admire the exquisite imperial eggs. Dance to festive folk music. Enjoy stories of Russian Easter traditions. Take part in a traditional Russian egg-rolling game. Decorate your own Fabergé-inspired egg.

This is the second program in the Konstantin Makovsky: The Tsar’s Painter series.
Professor Russell E. Martin explores the elaborate rituals by which a Russian tsar picked and married his “fairest in the land.” He also explores how this ostensibly open beauty contest was in fact a calculated spectacle.
