DESCRIPTION:Our local native flora is essentially tied to other aspects of the ecosystem\, including weather patterns. While many animals have the ability to move when conditions become rapidly unfavorable\, plants don’t have that option. Dr. Sara Via\, with the University of Maryland\, will lead us on an exploration of the effects our changing climate has on native plant communities and the animal populations they support. This intriguing lecture series focuses on local nature and conservation topics. DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, 8-10am\n \nJoin us this morning to take on the invasive plants along the stream and the bike path. This seciton of Sligo Creek has had a steady group of volunteers working to preserve the secret biodiversity of Sligo Creek. Join us and we may just show you something cool. We’ll certainly teach you how to work the invasives that are probably in your yard too. Work continues in this section to remove undesirable plants\, restore forest health and enjoy Sligo Creek throughout the year\, usually the last Saturday of the month. Workdays occur in all temperatures\, but are cancelled in the event of rain. Wear appropriate clothing\, bring your own tools or borrow ours. \nPlease RSVP by noon on Friday.

Please join us for Bartlett Tree Services’ presentation by Tim Zastrow and Riley Smith\, certified arborists\, on the safety and science of tree care. Refreshments will be provided. \n \nTim Zastrow is a Commercial Arborist Representative serving the Washington\, D.C. area. \nGrowing up in suburban Maryland\, Tim first learned to appreciate trees and the world around him from his maternal grandfather who was an avid gardener and amateur naturalist in Syracuse\, New York. When Tim was seven\, his grandfather gave the family a Butternut seedling from a tree that he had started from a seedling in the 1930s. The young tree was planted with love and lots of compost on his family’s property in Colesville\, Maryland. Tim then watched it grow to maturity. While pursing a degree in Entomology at the University of Maryland\, he started working in the field of arboriculture in 1985 for TreeMasters. In 2001\, Bartlett acquired this company and Tim got the chance to combine his skill and experience with Bartlett’s advanced technical resources and robust safety and training programs. He is a Board Certified Master Arborist\, a Maryland Licensed Tree Expert\, a Certified Tree Risk Assessor\, a Certified Tree Safety Professional\, and a member of the American Society of Consulting Arborists. Tim gets great pleasure every day helping people enjoy and care for their trees. \nRiley Smith\, Arborist Representative works out of Bartlett Tree Service’s Gaithersburg\, MD office.  \nRiley Smith was born in Washington\, D.C. and was raised in the surrounding suburbs. His love for the outdoors was stoked at an early age during numerous outings with his family camping\, back country hiking and during adventurous canoe trips navigating many of Maryland’s waterways. He spent three years of his childhood living overseas in Japan. While there his adventures didn’t stop. His family continued their exploration and climbed Mt. Fuji\, reaching the 12\,389 ft. summit. This collection of life experiences led him to attend the University of Tennessee where he obtained a BS in Forestry Wildlife and Fisheries Science. There he gained a deeper understanding of the natural world around him. Upon graduation he took a position with Maryland Dept. of Natural Resources as a watershed forester and rose to the ranks of Forestry Coordinator for the Chesapeake Bay. To broaden his knowledge of trees in the urban environment he decided to branch out into the arboricultural world. Today\, Riley is a Certified Arborist Representative. He is a licensed tree expert\, ISA Certified Arborist\, Qualified Tree Risk Assessor\, and Plant Health Care Specialist. DESCRIPTION:Join us and learn how to use the iNaturalist app in this informative talk by Guest Speaker\, Deborah Barber\, member of the Maryland Native Plant Society and Director of Land Management for the Maryland/D.C. Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. \nGet a kick out of learning about the iNaturalist app. \n\nUse the Compare function to find out what’s in an area based on visual similarity\, taxonomy\, or occurrences.\nLearn to do bulk identifications and precise identifications.\nUse the filter to look for…anything in the world.\n\nYou will benefit most if you have the iNaturalist app set up with a user account on your laptop or smartphone. This will give you a chance to try some of the tricks Deborah will share. The iNaturalist app is quite easy to download and it’s free. \nRegistration is required. \nAbout iNaturalist\niNaturalist is a not-for-profit program unlocking the world’s biodiversity for curiosity and conservation. SUMMARY:FREE Native Trees and Shrubs Giveaway!
DESCRIPTION:The Mill Creek Towne Garden Club is pleased to offer FREE native trees and shrubs provided to us by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. \nWe are giving away 25 native Pawpaw trees and 25 native Winterberry Holly Shrubs starting at 1PM and ending at 5PM on Tuesday\, March 30th. First come\, first serve. The plants will be available for contactless pick up at 7825 Rydal Terrace\, Derwood\, MD 20855 (Off Briardale). Please limit your selection to four plants per household. The trees and shrubs come bareroot – they need to be planted as soon as possible and you will need to provide deer protection unless they are inside a fenced area that the deer do not frequent. Please bring damp newspaper to wrap the roots up until they are ready for planting.  \nFor more detailed guidance on planting and caring for bare root trees and shrubs visit: https://dnr.maryland.gov/forests/Documents/Planting-Guide-Brochure.pdf \n  \nThese plants are free to the public but we do welcome donations to the Club to help us continue to beautify our neighborhood and provide quality programming. To donate please visit https://www.mctgardenclub.org/donations/ and consider joining the Mill Creek Towne Garden Club! \n  \nPawpaw (Asimina triloba) \nA shrub or small tree that tolerates shade\, pawpaw produces a fruit that is readily eaten by wildlife and humans.  It has a height 15 to 30 feet\, a spread of 15 to 30 feet\, and prefers full sun to part shade and moist fertile soils.  Often spreads by root suckers to form colonies or thickets. \n  \nWinterberry (Ilex verticillata) \nA shrub growing 3 to 12 feet with a spread of 3 to 12 feet.  Full sun to part shade.  Deciduous and dioecious.  Attracts birds.  Winterberry will tolerate wet swampy sites. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a Native By Design\, LLC presentation by Lauren Hubbard\, Derwood resident\, Master Gardener\, and Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional\, on “Native Plants for Sun and Shade”. Native plants make your garden beautiful and bring in the bees and butterflies too! Learn which plants native to our region grow best here. \nAbout Native by Design\, LLC: \nNative by Design\, LLC\, founded by Dr. Lauren Hubbard\, provides landscape design\, consultation and project management with a focus on sustainable approaches that will provide beauty\, support the ecosystem and reduce your long-term maintenance needs. \nAbout the Speaker: \nLaura Hubbard works with not-for-profits\, homeowners and municipalities to support their efforts to transition to sustainable landscaping practices. Her services include site assessment\, project planning and design\, educational workshops and community outreach\, and project management. She places an emphasis on approaches that are both beautiful and functional while also reducing long term maintenance\, creating sustainable landscapes that serve the client and the environment. \nWith a particular interest in the preservation of genetic diversity in native plant populations\, Lauren has served on the founding board of the Long Island Native Plant Initiative and has launched a project called Butterfly Bandwagon to promote the use of native plants in home landscaping. She has worked with Howard Ecoworks\, Muddy Branch Alliance and Urban Ecosystem Restorations providing program support\, community outreach\, and grant writing and management services that support ecological restoration and stewardship. \nShe has extensive experience as a project manager\, providing grant writing and implementation services to support education and environmental issues. Dr. Hubbard has a Ph.D. in Plant Biology and has used her advanced training to support efforts to maintain biodiversity within our plant communities. She is a Master Gardener\, Weed Warrior\, a certified Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional\, a certified Landscape-For-Life Trainer\, and a board member of the Maryland Native Plant Society.
